Sole & Soul Sunset Journeys:

Volume #6

Art Exhibition

Location: Hotel Lobby, Sole Mio Boutique Hotel & Wellness, Bangtao, Phuket

Symbolism of the Sugar Palm

A recurring motif in Monthian’s works, the sugar palm tree (ต้นตาล) represents resilience in Thai rural life. Once widespread, now less common, this plant has no deep roots and thrives under pressure. For Monthian, it stands as a metaphor for perseverance and nature’s quiet wisdom—“Obstacles and challenges make us strong.”

Featured Artworks

  • Countryside Charm 1 – This riverside piece features Tarn (ตาร)—a water plant with shell-like growths. To the artist, these forms represent the emotional layers we carry through life. The composition invites viewers into a moment of meditative stillness.
  • Water Liliy Pond 2 – Drawn from his childhood, this work reflects Buay Sai (water lilies) growing behind his home. Unlike the sacred Buay Luang, used in rituals, Buay Sai is humble and practical—used in meals, medicine, and daily life. It symbolizes hard work and steady personal growth.
  • Phromthep Viewpoint 1 – A calm, dawn-lit view of Phuket’s Phromthep Cape—a historical maritime landmark. Known for its cultural and navigational significance, this piece captures the serenity of a Thai coastal morning.
  • Evening at Phromthep 1 – Phuket’s most iconic sunset scene—boldly captured in contrasting hues and palm-lined silhouettes. The work preserves a fleeting moment of nature’s radiance.

About the Artist

Thai printmaker Monthian Yangthong carves stories of countryside life into wood using traditional multi-step woodblock printing techniques—each piece requiring over 10 manual stages of carving, layering, and hand-pressing.

Rooted in Japanese printmaking traditions, his art reflects rice fields, sugar palms, and water lilies, expressed through patience and emotion. Monthian values discipline, imperfection, and originality—his works are never digitally reproduced.

His technique connects to global art heritage. Japanese woodblock printing inspired Van Gogh, Monet, Munch, Picasso, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Monthian carries this legacy forward—preserving craftsmanship in a digital age.
